May 1, 2006 – Mike Geltrude Benefit dinner a huge success:
The foundation held it’s first annual benefit to raise funds for the awareness, education, and research of Malignant Melanoma at the beautiful Nanina’s in the Park in Belleville NJ. The dinner also provided an opportunity for many of Mike’s old friends, students, and athletes to meet up and share stories and remember Mike. The event was attended by nearly 500 people and over $50,000 was raised in addition to the $45,000 that has already been donated since Mike’s passing. Guest speakers included Mike’s oncologist and director of the Cancer Center at Hackensack Medical Center, Dr. Andrew Pecora, as well as Mike’s dermatologist Dr. Dominick Ligresti. Also in attendance were donor recipients, Cathering Poole of the Melanoma International Foundation, and Dr. James Goydos from the Melanoma Research Foundation. Both of these groups received a $15,000 donation from the Mike Geltrude Foundation. Although Mike’s physical presence was surely missed, his spirit was certainly there.
